New Mexico-based UbiQD achieves second place prize for its quantum dot cleantech pitch
Los Alamos, NM—September 11, 2024—UbiQD, Inc., the New Mexico-based leader in quantum dot (QD) technology and manufacturing, announced today its
runner-up finish at the CFS Open Innovation Pitch 2024 held in Tokyo, Japan. The event, Japan's largest open innovation platform, showcases the most promising startups from around the globe, with UbiQD securing the second-place prize of 1 million yen.

The
CFS Open Innovation Pitch is a premier event designed to facilitate collaboration between startups and established companies. This year, the competition featured 224 startups from 15 countries, including 48 international participants. UbiQD was selected as one of the 15 finalists to present their innovations in the final round on July 12, which was live-streamed on Zoom—the replay is now
available on YouTube.
"There are many opportunities for UbiQD in Japan, including strategic partnerships, customers, and investors," said Hunter McDaniel, UbiQD Founder and CEO.
"Competing in this impactful event meant some late nights and brushing up on my Japanese, it was fun."
UbiQD's core technology leverages the unique properties of quantum dots to optimize sunlight for various cleantech applications, including agriculture and solar energy. The company's flagship product,
UbiGro®, is a line of luminescent greenhouse films that shift the sunlight's spectrum to the most photosynthetically efficient wavelengths, promoting healthier plant growth and increased yields by as high as 40%. Additionally,
in collaboration with First Solar, UbiQD is developing applications for quantum dots in solar modules, aiming to boost the efficiency of photovoltaic panels.
"We are excited about the potential for our quantum dot technology in Japan, especially for our UbiGro Greenhouse Cover Film," noted Hisaaki Ishihara, UbiGro Product Manager at UbiQD.
"There are four times as much greenhouse area in Japan as the United States, it’s a big business."
